Bowling Basics

What is Tenpin Bowling?
Bowling is one of those games that takes a minute to learn and a lifetime to master.

  • The object of the game is to knock down all the pins
  • Each game is made up of ten FRAMES
  • You get to bowl two balls per frame in turn with up to five other players
  • Players stand at the black line and bowl the ball down the lane
  • Points are scored by knocking over the pins
Safety first
Bowling is great fun although it is easy to get carried away in the excitement. We want you to enjoy your visit to hollywood bowl and so would ask you to consider the following;

  • If you are not sure what to do please ask a member of staff - they'll be happy to help
  • Check that your bowling shoes fit comfortably - we have plenty so will be able to get a pair that fits you
  • Choose a bowling ball weight that suits you and check the finger hole sizes
  • Endeavour to keep behind the black "foul" line as the area beyond is very slippery
  • Avoid putting your hands in the ball return as they could easily become trapped
  • If there is an accident report it immediately as we always have a qualified first aider on duty
  • We recommend that you don't bowl at the same time as someone in the lane next to you as this can be distracting and cause a hazard.

What do I need to bring?
We provide all the specialist equipment like shoes and balls, this is all included in the price of each game.

  • You should dress in loose clothing, including light socks
  • When you arrive, swap your footwear at reception for a pair of bowling shoes
  • When your lane is ready go to the seating area and fill the players details in on the computer
  • If it’s your first visit, one of our lane attendants will be happy to help you do this
  • Choose a ball and start your game

How do I choose the right size of ball?
Choosing the correct size of ball will get you off to a flying start.  To get the right size of ball…

  • Cradle the ball gently in both hands
  • Place your thumb and middle two fingers of your preferred hand into the holes
  • If the weight fo the ball feels comfortable then you have the right ball

How do I actually bowl?
You know what you are trying to do and you have the right ball.  Now, the fun really starts with a good basic bowling technique.

  • Stand behind the foul line (the black line at the top of the lane) facing away from the pins
  • Take four or five normal walking steps , then turn around facing the pins
  • This is about the right distance for your bowling approach
  • Now line up your feet with one of the spots on the approach
  • You’ll probably find it easier to use the centre spot or one immediately to one side of it
  • If you are right-handed keep your left foot slightly forward, the opposite if you are left-handed
  • Keep both feet pointing straight down the lane about six inches apart
  • Keep your heels firm on the approach and cradle the ball in both hands
  • Step quickly forward, release one hand and swing the ball behind you with the other
  • As you near the foul line bring the ball forward and release it with a smooth bowling action
  • Be careful not to cross the foul line, if you do you will hear a buzzer sound

How does the scoring work?
The scoring is really very simple – once you have entered your details, the computer will do all the hard work for you

  • Each game has 10 frames
  • You get up to two balls in each frame to try and knock the pins down with
  • If you knock all the pins down with your first ball this is called a STRIKE!
  • If you score a STRIKE then only one ball is bowled in the frame
  • If you knock all the pins down with your second ball this is called a SPARE
  • The number of pins you knock down in each frame is your PINFALL, which is your score.
  • For example if you knock over nine pins in a frame you score 9 for that frame
  • When you get to the 10th frame you will get an extra ball if you score a SPARE, or two extra balls if you score a STRIKE
  • The player with the highest PINFALL is the winner

Can people with accessibility needs and small kids still play?
Of course, hollywood bowl is set up for everyone to enjoy bowling

  • Ramps for launching, and lightweight balls are ideal for small kids or bowlers with accessible
    needs
    .
  • All lanes have the option of bumpers on each side, so you can't help but score!
  • hollywood bowl has the latest in automatic bumpers to make your game even more fun. They are linked directly to the scoring, so they will automatically go up when you want them, and down when you don't want them - so Dad doesn't benefit as well as the kids!
